Amidst President Donald Trump’s push for the “largest deportation operation in American history,” the United Farm Workers Foundation met with Michigan State University students in February to discuss the rights of both documented and undocumented people living in the country.
"All humans, everyone in the whole nation, your work, your presence, your sweat, your education, your presence, not only matters, but it counts," said United Farm Workers Foundation organizer Daniel Oropeza. "Everybody has rights."
Oropeza showed students how to identify Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during the presentation. "If they're at your door, don't talk to them, don't engage with them," he said.
The foundation has played a key role to the university administration’s response to federal policy, said United Farm Workers Michigan director Amanda Villa.
MSU Police Community Liaison Coordinator Donnie Sams, left, reassured students at the event that campus police does not cooperate with immigration enforcement officers.
The United Farm Workers foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of farm workers and their families in the United States.
The "Know Your Rights" presentation is the first of many that will occur on campus throughout the year, Oropeza said.
